AFRICA DIRECT GIVING

Home: Welcome

YOUR DONATIONS GO A LONG WAY IN MALAWI...

£5 buys a bag of maize that can feed 2 people for 2 months, instead of depending on their neighbours for hand-outs

£7 buys a blanket instead of using old clothes donated by  their very poor neighbours

£11 pays for a whole term's school fees-enabling the orphans to have an education

£19 buys a mattress to help people sleep with dignity and comfort instead of lying on a dirt floor

£100-£200 buys bricks/roofing materials to repair homes damaged in rainstorms

£1000 pays for a small 'day centre' for the orphans and elderlies

NB! These prices are for materials only-all the building labour is donated by our local team of village volunteers, lead by Pastor Philemon

WHO WE ARE HELPING

Helping others to help themselves

This vulnerable group of 42 people have all lost their families, through Malaria or HIV/AIDS and only survive due to the generous hand-outs of their fellow villagers, who themselves have very little. Many days this group of children and elderlies go without food.  When Ali met them, everyone- including those aged 70-105, slept on a dirt floor, usually of a friend's house

WHO WE ARE

Ethical and DIRECT funding

Africa Direct Giving (formerly 'Malawi Direct'-the Malawian government made us change the name) is run by 2 people-Pastor Philemon Phiri in Malawi and Ali Cameron-Daw in the UK. Philemon leads a local team of volunteering villagers who try (they have very little themselves) to help this vulnerable and isolated group of orphans and elderly people by currently visiting them every 2/3 weeks.
Philemon's invaluable role is to ensure that EVERY penny sent to our fund is spent directly on exactly what is needed for this vulnerable group.
Ali met Philemon whilst volunteering in Malawi for 3 months in 2017. She is a company director of a UK business (Pet 24 Ltd). Her previous volunteering includes working as a governor and chair of governors at a large state school in West Sussex, a governor of an FE college and chair of trustees for a cancer charity. Ali is currently based in Bath, UK and her role is to raise awareness and funds, mainly online, for Africa Direct Giving.
There are no administration charges as both Ali and Philemon volunteer to do this work.

PEOPLE WITH NOTHING..

Giving hope and recognising dignity

When Philemon first took Ali to visit the orphans and elderlies, NONE of this 42-strong group had mattresses, blankets or food. The only reason any of them had survived was through the generosity of the villagers, who have very little themselves.
It was very shocking and moving for Ali to meet people who had so little, yet still managed to smile, be very welcoming and hold their dignity. It was very clear that everyone only wanted enough help to enable them to support themselves, which is our long-term goal. Our first and immediate short-term goal was to provide shoes, mattresses and blankets and food. We managed to do this through our first fund-raising project on Just Giving and Instagram, which raised £500. We were also able to provide some basic emergency medical supplies (including bus fares for travel to the hospital) maize and soap for the whole group.

OUR SHORT TERM GOALS

Immediate needs

We aim for everyone in this vulnerable group of 42 in Mayaka to have shelter, bedding, food, clothes and soap. For the orphans we need school fees (as little as £10 pays for a term of schooling). We also need a small emergency fund for medicine and bus travel to the hospital.

OUR LONG TERM GOALS

Helping others to help themselves

We plan to build a small day centre (approx £1,000), buy goats with pens, maize plants, farming tools, and other resources that will allow this dignified group of people to support themsleves, which is their strongest wish. Once this group is self-sufficient, Africa Direct Giving will focus on other remote rural villages that have the same need-that is children and elderly people who have no family left to support them. We are aiming to raise £5,000 so that we can register as a charity and most importantly, present our projects to the Malawian government to ask that they support their own people, on a long term basis. Currently no support exits for such vulnerable groups in rural Malawi.
